ABOUT THE ARTIST

Daniel Roy Sharples

Artist Statement

I am a (mostly) plein air landscape painter who likes to paint city scenes, preferably with traffic and people. I love the challenge of capturing things that are constantly moving and disappearing, despite it being very frustrating at times. I think it gives a sense of vitality that I would not get by working from photographs. Also, rather than recording a split second in time like a camera does, working en plein air allows me to compress two or three hours of activity, light, and atmosphere into a single image.

The pressure of painting on a street, in front of the public, is quite addictive. Though nerve-racking in the beginning, I now enjoy the experiences and stories that come about with each piece; the interesting characters that chatted to me, the seagull that shat on my easel, or the teenage girl who smudged my painting then ran off. I hope when people look at my paintings, this sense of authenticity comes through. Most of all I hope my paintings have enough depth and realism to be able to take the viewer back to a time when they stood in the same spot or walked down that same street.
